A cigarette at his chest
is crowded between five fingers
two on one side, three on the other
its smoke hovering around the
middle buttons of his overcoat
smothering his hand in blurred white
He's forgotten to bring it to his lips
his mind not seeing
receding embers dissolving into ash
but something in the distance that's
parted his lips and stretched his eyes
and led his traveling mind
away from his hand holding
a cigarette at his chest

Um. Inspired by a painting. I can't remember the name of it or the artist. It was of a man holding a cigarette, if that wasn't obvious. I don't like the line "his mind not seeing" but I think I like it more than "his mind not on" but if anyone has any suggestion I'll, of course, gladly take it.
